ZUNI, NM – Daryl Jay Dickson, a 37-yearold resident of Zuni and an enrolled member of the Zuni Pueblo, appeared in federal court following an indictment on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, announced Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico. Dickson, facing allegations of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, will remain in custody until a detention hearing scheduled for Monday, September 18, 2023.
According to court documents, Dickson stands accused of knowingly possessing a firearm and ammunition despite having a previous felony conviction in New Mexico state court. Additionally, he was barred from possessing a firearm and ammunition due to being classified as an unlawful user of, or addicted to, controlled substances.
It is important to note that an indictment represents only an allegation, and under the law, a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, Dickson could potentially face a maximum sentence of up to 10 years of imprisonment, followed by a period of supervised release lasting up to three years.
The investigation into this matter was conducted by the Zuni Police Department, with assistance from Zuni Fish and Wildlife and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones will be responsible for prosecuting the case.
