CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Cibola General Hospital officials post a “review” of monthly meetings via Facebook. A summary of the April 24 session was available on May 13.

The Cibola General Hospital Corporation board meets monthly except in December.

The public may request copies of the adopted minutes by contacting the administrative office, according to the recently adopted CGH bylaws.

Finances

March marked a return to profitability; operating revenue exceeded expenses in four of the last six months. The hospital in Grants had the highest Medicaid percentage, and second highest self-pay percent of volume in New Mexico reported Chief Financial Officer Jim Hermes. The hospital recorded the third highest profit margin in the state for March. It was the only hospital in New Mexico with no longterm debt.

Contract nurse staffing expenditures dropped to $60,000 in March compared to February, $70,000, and January, $90,000. Over time salaries remained at $80,000 after peaking at $160,000 in January. CFO Hermes noted $3.1 million in net revenue, which reflected $330,000 above budget. Charges were $6.8 million, which was $400,000 above budget and one million dollars greater than February costs.

The demand for OR Department procedures created income that more than offset the other outpatient ancillary services. Revenue generated by the Cibola Family Health Center (clinic) and the hospital ER Department were down 10 percent and 32 percent, respectively. Surgeon revenues grew from $1.66 million in the first quarter, October-December 2020, to $2.87 million at the end of the second quarter, March 31, 2021, according to the CFO.

CGH spent $600,000 for construction and capital expenditures. The hospital recorded a drop in the number of cash-on-hand days to 205, explained Hermes.

Community Health Needs Assessment

The hospital has conducted the Community Health Needs Assessment, which provides information and guidance for improving service to area residents said CEO Thomas Whelan. He noted that the Orthopedic and Physical Therapy Departments were recently expanded which included providing enhanced facilities. These upgrades generated more revenue in April and allowed CGH to be more responsive to community members’ needs.

The report emphasized that the Radiology Department was busier in March than in any other previous month.

Seeking vendor services

Hospital officials have identified three vendors who met the initial criteria as a possible Management Services Group. (None of the three were named in the May 13 FB posting.)

Two action items The board voted to designate funding to

The board voted to designate funding to the Grants NMSU-Nursing Program and other NMSU-Grants Campus medical programs. (No details were included in the meeting “review.”)

The other action item included approval of the amendments and corrections to the CGH Corporate Bylaws. The latest bylaws have been posted on the hospital website.

County/hospital relationship

The Cibola General Hospital Corporation is registered with the State of New Mexico as a nonprofit. Cibola County owns two properties in Grants leased by CGHC - the Cibola General Hospital buildings, 1016 E. Roosevelt Ave., and the Cibola Family Health Center (known as the clinic), 1423 E. Roosevelt Avenue.

The hospital promotes its commitment to “better serve Cibola County and the surrounding communities.” The CGH educational outreach activities emphasize the facility’s dedication to providing healthcare to area residents.
