GRANTS, N.M. - The City of Grants is currently undertaking an important infrastructure project on Nimitz Ave that aims to enhance the community’s water and wastewater systems while improving roadway conditions. In collaboration with On-call engineer Wilson & Co and contractor Compass Engineering from Albuquerque, the project will span from E. Sage to Clovis Ave and includes a comprehensive scope of work.
According to the City of Grants project manager, Nadine Jiron, the planned improvements encompass the replacement of essential water and wastewater lines, the installation of new curb and gutter systems, enhanced sidewalks, improved drainage, and the roadway reconstruction. The project, which has a projected timeline of 180 dats to reach substantial completion, is an investment of $3,374,417.79. This funding will come from a combination of three separate grants, reflecting the city’s commitment to leveraging external resources for local development.
Recently, the construction team faced an unexpected challenge when an unmarked gas line was struck during excavation work. Thanks to Compass Engineering’s proactive measures to expose existing utilities, the issue was quickly identified. Grants Fire and Rescue responded promptly and stood by to ensure safety on the site. Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) arrived shortly thereafter pinching off the damaged line to halt gas flow. Fortunately, no major delays of the overall project are anticipated as a result of this incident.
For the duration of the construction, Nimitz Ave from E. Sage to Truman Ave is closed to through traffic, although local residents continue to have access. Business operations at Allsup’s and the nearby car wash will remain unaffected. As the project progresses, closures will be phased to continue work towards Clovis Ave.
