GRANTS, N.M. – Jenny’s Ladies Fashions has been a staple business in Grants, New Mexico for 33 years. Jenny’s, formerly located in the Roosevelt Plaza in Grants, is now relocating to 1100 West Santa Fe Ave. into the former Lathems Stockman store.

Alene Joyner, owner of Jenny’s, said the store started out selling lingerie and later added the clothing line; Joyner said the business has had customers from all over.

“I would ask my mother to buy her own building, but she never wanted too,” Joyner said.

Joyner, President of Grants/Cibola County Chamber of Commerce, said that she joined the chamber to help promote Jenny’s.

“I love our town and I want to help promote our town, our main street,” Joyner said. “I want to see our community grow.”

Joyner said that the previous location of Jenny’s in Roosevelt Plaza was falling apart, and the owner would do nothing to repair the building.

“That building always leaked and we got a ton of rain, and the roof caved in. We lost a lot of our merchandise. The cave-in exposed the mold growing in the ceiling,” Joyner said. “I called the owner, Adam Karom, to see what he would do to fix the problem and he said, ‘that he would go spray bleach on the mold,’” Joyner said.

Joyner said it wasn’t just her store that had mold, but all the stores had mold growing in the ceilings from all the leaks over the years.

“KMIN can’t even open their back door without getting a roof jack. You can see daylight through KMIN’s ceiling,” Joyner said.

Joyner said that Karom told her he was not going to fix the roof, saying it would cost $250,000.

“He [Karom] told me that if I was not happy then I can move out,” Joyner said. “I told him I was going to get the mold tested. I told him I was going to move out and he responded by asking me if I have paid my rent.”

Joyner asked her mother, Jenny Sprunk Zwiefelhofer, Jenny’s founder what she wanted to do, and Jenny told Joyner to go ahead and move.

“I am excited about this move,” Joyner said. “I bought the Lathem’s building, and I have more square footage and I am going to expand my inventory.”

Jenny’s offers lady’s casual, special occasion, bridal and tuxes and all accessories. Jenny’s offers sizes ranging from extra small to 6XL for both men and women. Joyner said they will be adding a line of men’s wear, too.

“With this new building we have gained about 2000 more square footage which will allow us to carry more merchandise and employ more employees for our community,” Joyner said.

Joyner said she is going to set up a webpage for Jenny’s so customers can order the colors and sizes online versus having the store do it.

“It will help cater to our customers,” Joyner said. “We may have a black dress in the store, but the customer wants that dress in red, with the website we are going to have, the customer can now order what color and size they want.”

Joyner said she is hoping to have a reopening party on October 14.
