CUBERO, N.M. – New Mexico State Police were led on a high-speed chase through Interstate 40 on August 21. The incident began around 6:30 p.m., when NMSP officers witnessed a black sedan speeding down the road and turned on their lights and sirens to make a traffic stop. Video footage released by NMSP shows the events that led to the eventual arrest of 23-year-old Ruben Sernas of Albuquerque, N.M.

The black sedan fled Eastbound, evading the police, who realized there were three people inside the sedan. To avoid the state police, the sedan travelled at speeds upwards of 120 miles per hour and dodged through traffic, using turn signals as the vehicle weaved in front of and around cars.

The black sedan left the interstate, going up the offramp for Exit 104 to Cubero, N.M. The sedan slowed to a crawl as two passengers exited the vehicles, falling to their knees and putting their hands on their heads as they were arrested. The two passengers have not been charged with a crime.

After dropping off the two passengers the black sedan continued its evasion of the police, having left the interstate, it drove down Rainbow Road, near Cubero, N.M.

The car eventually came to stop on the bumpy road, where the driver, 23-year-old Ruben Sernas of Albuquerque, N.M., was apprehended and is facing multiple charges. When officers searched the inside of Sernas’ car, they located 3.7 ounces of marijuana (the legal limit in New Mexico is two ounces), 20 grams of cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and an open container of alcohol. Sernas is also facing felony evasion charges.

Sernas will be seen in the Cibola County Magistrate Court on October 12, according to court records.
