MILAN, N.M. - The flashing lights of different patrol cars lit up the evening sky in Milan, NM on a busy Labor Day Weekend. 13 Police Officers, from three different Law Enforcement Agencies had one goal in mind. The safety of the community.
On Saturday, September 4, 2021, Officers of the Milan Police Department, Cibola County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico State Police had a busy night on the streets of the Village of Milan on Labor Day weekend. Officers hit the streets full force as part of the Cibola County DWI Task Force for a directed patrol operation in the Village of Milan. The main purpose of the directed patrol was to look for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. The area of focus was the Village of Milan.
Due to a rise in firearm related calls in the Village of Milan, Chief Carl Ustupski took a proactive approach and reached out to the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office. The Cibola County Sheriff’s Office provided their Safe Streets Unit who focused on the areas where firearm related calls have occurred. The presence of Law Enforcement and traffic enforcement are great measures used in crime prevention.
A total of 53 vehicles were stopped during the fourhour operation. A total of 22 traffic citations, three written warnings, and 23 verbal warnings were issued. One vehicle was towed and one warrant arrest was made. The directed patrol was a success, not only in keeping the public safe, but it was also a way to educate the motoring public of traffic violations that were being committed. This was just the start of the joint efforts between the local Law Enforcement agencies to make sure that we keep our community safe and continue the proactive approach to policing in the area.
