State repeals 1969 abortion ban; No longer criminal act

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — New Mexico has officially repealed a 1969 law which criminalized abortion in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision nullified this law, but the toothless law remained on the books until the New Mexico State Legislature voted to remove it. The governor signed an order removing the 1969 law on Feb. 26.

State legislature reintroduces End of life bill

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — A highly controversial bill that did not even see a vote in the House of Representatives in 2019 has been reproposed to the New Mexico State Legislature this year. House Bill 47, known as the Elizabeth Whitefield End of Life Options Act succeeded in a House Floor vote to advance to the New Mexico Senate.

Safe Streets Operation Arrest

On February 18, 2021 Cibola County Sheriff’s Department conducted a MultiJurisdictional County Wide Safe Streets Operation. Agencies that participated in this operation were Cibola County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico Department of Correction-STIU, Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Division, and the United States Marshal Services. The primary objective of this operation was to locate, and arrest subjects identified as having outstanding felony warrants and or probation and parole warrants in Cibola County, proactive crime suppression and enforcement in high crime areas, and obtain creditable intelligence related to drug trafficking, stolen and illegal firearms, human trafficking, and property crimes.

GRANTS, N.M. — Mayor Martin “Modey” Hicks mentioned his dissatisfaction with the current protocol, which he says allows anyone except for the mayor to add and take items off the agenda. He specifically brought up a budget proposal/resolution that was approved last week. Hicks said it did not include any numbers. He requested to have it put on the March 1 agenda so that the council could discuss it, but it was not.

Standing water- The newly constructed bridge on Washington Ave. in Grants was one of the subjects of conversation at the most recent city council meeting when Grants Mayor Martin “Modey” Hicks asked the contractors why the water was pooling under and on both sides of the bridge. Turquoise level Re-openings begin as New Mexico reduces restrictions

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — New Mexico finally reached a positive point in the fight against COVID-19. March of 2020 was the beginning of the struggles that Cibola has had to endure. Businesses across the county were forced to close their doors, jobs were labeled “essential” or “nonessential,” masks became the hottest accessory of 2020, and life as the community knew it changed drastically. Almost one year after the coronavirus began ravaging the county, taking with it 104 Cibola residents, the county and the state are rounding a corner.
