New Mexico Supreme Court Opinion Provides Guidance About Pretrial Detention

SANTA FE – The state Supreme Court today issued an opinion providing guidance to district courts in deciding pretrial detention requests from prosecutors. In a unanimous opinion, the justices clarified the analysis that courts should follow in determining whether legal requirements have been met for a person charged with a felony to be held in jail while awaiting trial.

National Park Service Conducts Prescribed Fire at El Malpais National Monument

Grants, NM – The National Park Service at El Malpais National Monument is preparing to conduct a prescribed fire on the north side of the monument adjacent to Highway 53 between mile marker 65 and 68. The primary objective of this prescribed fire is to improve forest health by reducing the build-up of vegetation that can fuel a wildfire. Fire plays a natural role at El Malpais and helps ensure the resiliency of this fire dependent ecosystem.

Firewood Permits for Sale

GRANTS, NM - The Mount Taylor Ranger District has begun to offer firewood permits. These can be purchased in person or over the phone by going to the Mount Taylor District Office at 1800 Lobo Canyon Road in Grants, NM, or over the phone at 505-287-8833. Firewood permits at Mount Taylor District Office, both in person and by phone, will be sold Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 12 noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm only. The permits may also be purchased at the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands Supervisors Office at 2113 Osuna Rd. NE in Albuquerque, NM. The permits are being offered at a cost of $2 per cord. The minimum amount of purchase is $20. If you are interested in purchasing a firewood permit over the phone, you must pay with a credit or debit card. The permit, along with a map of the collection areas, will be mailed to you within 1 to 3 business days. All other types of transactions will be accepted in person only.
