Police Arrest Suspect After Attempted Break-In

GRANTS, NM – In the early morning, before break of day on May 22, a resident on the 800 block of North Sage Avenue was awoken by the sound of a person trying to enter their home. Grants Police Department located and identified DeWayne Hudson, Jr. as a person of interest and placed him under arrest for a drunk and disorderly charge after having him medically cleared at Cibola General Hospital.

Battery Leads to Tasing

GRANTS, NM – Grants man Bevis John was arrested on May 11 for assault and battery. According to a police report, police were called to John’s sister’s house because of an alleged fight. After a physical confrontation with police led to a taser being used on John three times, he was subdued and cleared for booking. John was arrested for assault and battery, and drunk and disorderly, he was released only hours later and was arrested again on the next day on another charge of drunk and disorderly. While John was arrested, all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and charges are only an allegation of wrongdoing.

GRANTS, NM - NM State Auditor Joseph Maestas and State Treasurer Laura Montoya have issued a joint alert to all counties and municipalities throughout the State. This is due to collateralization laws and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation guidance being inconsistently followed across the State.

Homicide in Grants

GRANTS, NM – The City of Grants, New Mexico, was rocked by a homicide on Smith Street on May 15 in the afternoon. Police quickly apprehended a suspect who, according to multiple police reports of the incident, admitted to committing the murder. Police arrested Curtis Salazar and charged him with First Degree Murder (Willful and Deliberate), and Tampering with Evidence (Highest Crime a Capital, First- or Second-Degree Felony), Salazar remains in custody as of press deadline, according to court documents.

City Discusses Lodger’s Tax, Mayor Pro Tem

GRANTS, NM – A special Grants City Council meeting was held on Friday May 19, at 2 p.m. to award lodger’s tax funding to local businesses and nonprofits in Cibola County, as well as discuss other matters including electing a new mayor pro tempore. The businesses that received funding included Fire & Ice Bike Rally, New Mexico Mining Museum, Grants MainStreet Project, Inc., American Legion Riders Chapter 18, among others.

Despite Officer Shortages, GPD Keeps Moving Forward

GRANTS, NM – Grants Police Department is running a staff of 14 certified officers, down five from their cap of 19 officers. Manpower is the biggest issue GPD faces at the moment, this has created large challenges for GPD, but they are finding ways around the issues to make sure there is protection for the citizens.
