NTU Automotive Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive Vehicle Training

CROWNPOINT, NM – On February 10, 2023, Navajo Technical University received its first Hybrid Vehicle, a Toyota Prius C. The Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive system automatically switches between electric and conventional engine power thanks to fuel-saving technology. Hybrid Synergy Drive will adapt according to the driving condition as it controls the energy coming from both sources and informs the vehicle how to combine them.

Aggie Cupboard Needed in Challenging Times

GRANTS, NM – Strategically located in one of the two studentbuilt homes on the NMSU Grants campus is the Aggie Cupboard, a free food pantry for the entire NMSU Grants community, including students, faculty, and staff. One in eight people go hungry in New Mexico, according to the charity, Feeding America, and that fact wasn’t lost on Mathematics professor, David Bishop, who had been talking with his wife, Suzanne, for years about how they could make an impact. Suzanne took a leap and spearheaded what is now the Aggie Cupboard when she donated $1,000 from a stimulus check to purchase food for the project that until that point had been a dream. According to the organization Students Against Hunger, more than 200 college campuses across this country have established food pantries to help students, staff, and faculty survive as food costs continue to outpace earnings.

Milan Fire, Cibola County Emergency Services Aide the Quad

Cibola County Emergency Services requested mutual aid to assist them with this year’s Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon and perform EMS patrols between the bike/run transition all the way up to the ski/snowshoe transition. A command post unit was stationed and Milan Fire unit U-21 (Side by Side UTV) were manned with medics and first responders and were available to respond to any possible medical emergency during the race. No injuries were reported to EMS units

Rep. Vasquez Outlines Priorities for New Mexico in State Legislature Speech

SANTE FE, N.M. – On Monday, February 13, U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) outlined his top priorities for improving the state of New Mexico in a joint address with Senator Martin Heinrich and Rep. Teresa Leger-Fernandez at the State Legislature at the New Mexico State Capitol in Santa Fe. In his speech, Vasquez focused on creating good-paying jobs, supporting local energy choices, prioritizing community safety, and promoting conservation.

Justice Found Four Years Later

PUEBLO OF LAGUNA – Florida Man Alexis Riego was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine for involuntary manslaughter on Interstate 40 in the Laguna Pueblo. According to court records, Riego caused the crash that was responsible for the deaths of four people and injuries of two people in 2019 while he was driving a semi-truck and not paying attention to the road.

Semi-Truck Accident Outside of Grants

Grants Fire was dispatched to the 85 MM for a motor vehicle accident involving semis that went head on. Upon arrival personnel found three Semis and one Car involved in the accident. Grants Fire did extrication on one patient from the car involved. Multiple patients were transported to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to major.

GRANTS, N.M. – Grants Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a small fire burning outside the Lobo Canyon Fire Department on February 19.

Cibola Drought Monitor – January Update

Drought conditions in Cibola County are back on the rise after several months of decline. Even when conditions were improving, the United States Department of Agriculture still had Cibola County officially declared as being “in drought.” This designation has not gone away. With drought conditions slightly worsening, the US Climate Prediction Center is increasing the size of what they expect Cibola’s drought will look like over the next several months, covering a large chunk in the eastern half of Cibola County.
