GRANTS, N.M. – In an effort to honor the dedication and bravery of local firefighters and police officers, a significant project has come to fruition on Grants Main Street.
The initiative, which received funding over a year and a half ago, has finally come to the installation of two bronze sculptures that serve as a permanent tribute to these community heroes. The sculptures, crafted by veteran artist Austin Weisel from Colorado, are a product of meticulous planning and collaboration. Known for his hand-cast bronze work through his company, Honorable Sculptures, Weisel brings not only artistic skill but also a personal history. After completing his military service, Weisel turned his passion towards creating art that embodies honor and respect – a mission that aligns perfectly with the purpose of these sculptures. The designs were carefully selected to capture the essence of the first responders they represent.
The sculptures portray a firefighter and a police officer, both detailed and weighing approximately 600 and 550 pounds, respectively. Their lifelike appearances feature intricate details, from the texture of their uniforms to the expressions on their faces, designed to evoke pride and respect from onlookers.
Projects Director Nadine Jiron said, “They can be seen in the community as people are driving by… it catches your eye.”
Positioned centrally on Main Street, these sculptures are strategically placed to be seen by residents and tourists alike. As traffic passes by, the sculptures are intended to catch the eye, inspiriting appreciation for the hard work and commitment exemplified by the local heroes they depict. It’s a move that community leaders hope will also enhance local tourism.
Notably, the unveiling of these sculptures coincide with the patriotic spirt of the 4th of July, making it a particular time for such a celebration. The artworks stand as a reminder the sacrifices made by those who serve in law enforcement and fire services, often risking their lives to protect and save others.
“We actually already had a couple of tourists come by,” Jiron said.
Community members are already expressing enthusiasm about the addition, with many stopping by to take photographs and pay
Photo by Nadine Jiron their respects. As with any new public installation, the hope is that the sculptures will be treated with the respect they deserve. Community leaders are urging vigilance against vandalism, with plans to apply protective coatings to ensure their longevity. The presence of these bronze figures seeks not only to beautify Main Street but also to foster a culture of respect and gratitude towards the individuals they represent.
“I think it’s going to be a really nice addition to our Main Street,” Nadine Jiron said.
The installation process itself consisted of crews working diligently to asdic the sculptures securely to the ground. Using epoxy to adhere them to a concrete base, the installation is expected to be completed shortly, further adding to the anticipation from members of the community.
As the sculptures settle, they promise to stand as lasting symbols of courage, sacrifice, and community pride reminder of the tireless efforts made by first responders every day.
