Village of Milan Initiates Comprehensive Renovation of Public Swimming Pool

MILAN, NM – The Village of Milan is embarking on an extensive renovation of its public swimming pool, originally constructed in 1995.

The decision to renovate comes after identifying multiple infrastructure issues that require immediate attention to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the community, according to Village Manager Candi Williams.

Williams was quick to clarify that no pool-goer was ever in danger and that the pool was safe.

During the recent 'Coffee with the Managers' meeting, it was revealed that the pool has persistent leaks in the walls of the shower areas. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the walls were backed with Sheetrock, which is not suitable for wet environments.

The village is now faced with the decision to either fully replace the damaged sections or remodel the existing structure.

A contractor's feasibility study raised concerns about the current state of the pool, prompting proactive measures to prevent potential safety hazards. Although there is no immediate danger to the public, village officials are keen on addressing these issues before they escalate.

The renovation plan includes demolishing the front section of the pool area to rebuild the showers, locker rooms, and office space. The pool will also be resurfaced, and the columns at the front will be restored. William explained that any concerns about rust from the rafters or the sides of the pool will be addressed during this renovation period.

Compliance with public safety regulations necessitates the installation of three showers and three bathrooms to meet the required capacity, as the current setup only has one bathroom, no showers and is not compliant with federal requirements.

The pool renovations are set to begin in September, pending necessary approvals.

The village explored temporary solutions such as mobile showers to keep the pool open, but the high cost of $30,000 per month made this option impractical.

Williams said this comprehensive renovation aims to enhance the facilities and ensure they meet modern standards, ultimately providing a safer and more enjoyable experience for Milan's residents.
