The GHS baseball team was able to close out the Rams from Poratales this past weekend in 2 games,4-3 and 13-3 respectively, in a best of 3 series. In the first game on Friday, May 10th the Pirates trailed 3-0 for 4 innings as the15th seed Rams were eyeing a possible opening game upset of the 2nd seeded Grants Pirates.

Track Complete Districts

The GHS track team wrapped up the district meet at Valencia High School last Saturday. Notables for the Pirates were Manuel Gonzales, 1st in the high jump, 5’ 10”, Andres Lazos, 1st in the triple-jump 39.11-75,John Paul Miller 2nd in the 2200 meters with a time of 11:07.53, Knight Long 3rd in the 400 meter with a time of 54.52, Julian Padilla 3rd in the high jump 5’ 4”, Andres Lazos 3rd in the long jump 2000, Santiago Paredes 3rd in the discus 119-6, and the 4x100 boys relay team, 2nd place, with a time of 45.79. For the lady Pirates Jenna Gurule 1st in the 300 meter hurdles 51.41, Laila Martinez 3rd in the 400 meter dash 1:02.19, also 3rd in the 3200 meters 13:12.045,Tori Felipe 1st in javelin 96-11, also 2nd in teh shot put 32-7, and the sprint medley relay team 2nd place 4:48.23.

Lady Pirate tennis team for making the state tennis tournament in 4A as a 12 seed; Andres Lazos, white shirt, for receiving a first place in triple jump at the 4A district 5 track meet; Manuel Gonzales, (black shirt) for receiving a first place in the high jump at the district track meet.

Pirates Earn Second Seed

A spectacular season continues for the GHS baseball team as they received a second seed in the 4A state baseball tournament and will host the Portales Rams (12-11,3-6) who received the 16th seed. “We will continue to prepare (for Portales) like we have all season,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee. The Pirates will host the Rams in a best of three series starting on Friday, May 10th at 4pm and game two on Saturday May 11th at 11am and game three if needed at 1pm.

Lady Pirate Softball Season Wraps-Up

The Lady Pirates softball season concluded with an 8-18, 2-6 record. “The season has been a transformative journey for myself and the team,” said first year GHS softball head coach Victor Aldaz, who had 21 days to get is team ready for their first game, “Statistically, we’ve outperformed our historical records–I’m confident that we’re on the right path to build a program— capable of competing at the highest level.” Aldaz acknowledged improvement in his players and “commendable performances,” throughout the season.

Season of Learning Ends for Los Alamitos Baseball Team

A relatively inexperienced Los Alamitos Middle School baseball team completed their second spring season on April 30 with a double-header outing versus Mountain View. The twinbill took place on the Grants High School home field – a gorgeous Astro-turf site which players from both teams thoroughly enjoyed playing on.
