FBI alert: Man robs Albuquerque bank

An unidentified man wearing an olive green longsleeve shirt and blue jeans robbed a northeast Albuquerque credit union on Monday afternoon (9/20/2021). The robbery occurred at Sandia Federal Credit Union, 8505 Candelaria Rd NE, at approximately 4 p.m.

The battle wages on COVID-19 surge continues

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – As COVID-19 prepares for its second winter in Cibola County, the disease has reached a grim milestone: More American deaths than the 1918-19 Spanish Flu. The historymaking news comes as Cibola – and New Mexico as a whole – are suffering through a surge of increased cases; an increase in local deaths historically follows a spike in cases, and Cibola has already seen multiple deaths from the ongoing surge. As of September 20, Cibola was considered a “Very High-Risk” area for unvaccinated people.

Grants council hires new attorney’s

GRANTS, N.M. – The City of Grants now has new lawyer representing them, the action occurred when the city council voted to hire the law firm Robles, Rael & Anaya, P.C. at the last city council meeting which took place on September 17. Only three councilmen were present at the meeting, those being Mayor Pro tem Rick Lucero, along with Councilmen Fred Padilla and Fred Rodarte. Councilman Erik Garcia was absent, and Mayor Martin “Modey” Hicks opened the meeting, but then had to leave to attend employment.

Murder suspect arrested

GRANTS, N.M. – Late at night on August 7 a ‘shots fired’ call came across police scanners for San Jose Drive. As GPD officers arrived on scene they discovered an Albuquerque, New Mexico, man who had been fatally shot in the upper chest. Working with the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Grants Police Department were able to identify and arrest Alejandro Balderrama, 40, of San Rafael, N.M.

Groundbreaking on a $300 million investment

GRANTS, N.M. – After years of preparation, Bright Green Corporation is ready to begin groundbreaking on a marijuana growth and research facility. The groundbreaking is expected to take place on October 5; Bright Green is a company located in Grants, New Mexico, owning the greenhouse property off Sakelares Boulevard. On May 24, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Bright Green’s “$300M investment in high-tech cannabis manufacturing and research facility,” the announcement, while a good outlook for the community economically, caught Cibola County’s elected officials by surprise, with leaders from Cibola County, Village of Milan, and City of Grants governments left wondering about the details in this project. Up until August 15, elected leaders in each of the county’s governments informed the Cibola Citizen that they had not been contacted about Bright Green’s investment.

Commissioners discuss Salary Study Plan

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – On Thursday, September 9 at 5 p.m., the Cibola County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting to discuss two considerations, one of which County Manager Kate Fletcher was very excited about. Chairman Daniel Torrez and Commissioner Ralph Lucero were absent from the meeting, while Commissioner Martha Garcia participated in the meeting via phone call. Commissioner Lowery filled in for Torrez and led the meeting.

Rainbow Road arrest

CUBERO, N.M. – New Mexico State Police were led on a high-speed chase through Interstate 40 on August 21. The incident began around 6:30 p.m., when NMSP officers witnessed a black sedan speeding down the road and turned on their lights and sirens to make a traffic stop. Video footage released by NMSP shows the events that led to the eventual arrest of 23-year-old Ruben Sernas of Albuquerque, N.M.
