Maryland nuclear engineer and spouse arrested on espionage-related charges

Jonathan and Diana Toebbe, both of Annapolis, Maryland, were arrested in Jefferson County, West Virginia, by the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) on Saturday, Oct. 9. They will have their initial appearances on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in federal court in Martinsburg, West Virginia. For almost a year, Jonathan Toebbe, 42, aided by his wife, Diana, 45, sold information known as Restricted Data concerning the design of nuclear-powered warships to a person they believed was a representative of a foreign power. In actuality, that person was an undercover FBI agent. The Toebbes have been charged in a criminal complaint alleging violations of the Atomic Energy Act.

Heinrich, Luján introduce legislation to responsibly fund critical public services for tribal nations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) introduced the Indian Programs Advance Appropriations Act (IPAAA) of 2021 to provide advance appropriations and avoid lapses in funding for the Indian Health Service (IHS), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), and the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), which fund critical public services for Tribal Nations, including hospitals, schools, law enforcement, child welfare programs, among other services. The legislation is led by Luján in the U.S. Senate and by U.S. Representatives Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) and Don Young (R-Alaska) in the U.S. House of Representatives.

I don’t know if you know this or not, but, Grants High School has started back up the Marine Corps Junior ROTC program. In my humble opinion, this is one of the best programs the high school has ever had. The young people have won countless awards statewide and national competitions as well. So, a tip of the cap to GHS, the staff, and the cadets for keeping this program going.

GRANTS, N.M. – For the past few months, local government managers have met with locals the first Thursday of every month to discuss community issues and provide updates from each municipality. However, with the Village of Milan searching for someone to fill their open village manager position the past few months that these meetings have occurred, locals have only heard from City of Grants Manager Vanessa Chavez and Cibola County Manager Kate Fletcher. That changed during the October 7 Coffee with the Managers, when the new village manager, Linda Cooke, was finally introduced.

Wednesday, October 6, “Book Talk” readers’ group met at the Grants Public Library. The topic, decided by the readers at the September meeting, was poetry. Atten dees enthusiastically discussed poets, poems, books of poetry and poetic styles. The topic selected for next month is “books that have been made into movies”.

Taxes; The $2 questions

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – There are two bond measures on the upcoming November 2 ballot, both asking for permission to approve a $2 tax each, per $1,000 of a property’s taxable value. If approved, both questions will see the money used for purposes of enhancing schools and equipment inside of them. Only one of the questions, however, will be on a voter’s ballot, either the question pertaining to Grants/Cibola County School District, or the question pertaining to Quemado Independent School District.

Navajo Technical University expands STEM programs by introducing B.S. in Environmental Engineering

CROWNPOINT, NM – On August 30, 2021, Navajo Technical University (NTU) was granted approval by the Higher Learning Commission to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering. NTU’s Environmental Engineering program introduces a holistic approach from a broad scope of STEM fields to manage and improve interrelated Earth systems: hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere.

On Sept. 29, the program exemplified its teaching approach by hosting a guest presentation by local 1104 pipeline welders and unveiling the program’s latest classroom technology, the VRTex 360 virtual welder.

Reporter CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Cibola County appears to have reached a peak in this third-wave of COVID-19 infections, ending September with 3,339 total COVID cases. In Cibola County, as across the rest of the world, the latest COVID-19 surges are being driven by the Delta Variant of COVID-19 – the same disease, but more contagious – Delta began to surge in Cibola County on August 2, lasting about two months, Delta appears to have peaked on September 28. With over a week’s worth of declining COVID-19 cases in Cibola following the surge. Historically, deaths follow large surges of COVID-19, typically lagging behind the surge, a trend which is holding true as five COVID-19 attributed deaths have been reported since the start of the surge.
