CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – The 2020 Census struggled along with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over it. Due to the pandemic and extra difficulty in getting census results back, the United States Congress extended the deadline for getting responses to the census. Months later, the US Census Bureau has begun releasing the results of the decennial census and Cibola didn’t see a massive shift in population.

VILLAGE OF MILAN N.M. – The Village of Milan Board of Trustees held a workshop on Wednesday, August 11 at 5:30 p.m. The board, excluding Trustee Chris Archuleta, who was absent, heard from a citizen regarding drainage issues, heard from a village employee regarding the condition of the Milan Swimming Pool, and discussed village affairs, ranging from the mosquito spraying schedule to the pumpkin patch event, and financial transitioning.

Herrell request for field hearing on border

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Yvette Herrell (R-NM) has sent a letter to Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) of the Committee on Oversight and Reform requesting a field hearing on the New Mexico southern border to address security, public health, and illegal immigration issues. The letter was co-signed by every Republican Committee Member.

SAN RAFAEL, N.M. – After being in custody for murder, Alejandro Balderrama was mistakenly released thanks to confusion as Balderrama was also being held on charges from the US Marshal’s Service, he was arrested by the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office and returned to prison three years ago. Now, after serving out his sentence, Balderrama was released with the condition that he checks into a halfway house.

Pandemic offered Velarde winery time to improve

When the coronavirus pandemic temporarily halted tourist traffic and shuttered restaurants and bars throughout New Mexico, Black Mesa Winery in Velarde had an inventory of wine and hard cider worth $100,000 and fewer avenues to deliver its products to customers. Winery owners Jerry and Lynda Burd were able to keep products moving out the door through online wine tasting events, shipments to wine club members, and creative drive-by tours that kept customers engaged.
