Pizza 9 and community support GHS alumnus and sister after loss

GRANTS, N.M. – Grants High School alumnus and former Grants Pirates football player, Shane Barron, graduated in May of this year. Barron played football for the Pirates all four years of high school, and his mother, Charlene Hatten, was a huge supporter of Barron and the Pirates every single one of those four years, all while also battling stage four breast cancer.

Cibola’s Fentanyl epidemic

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Drug searches and seizures are not an uncommon occurrence throughout Cibola County, which boasts Interstate 40, a road better known as the Drug Corridor. Law enforcement from across the county have been working on drug interdiction and takedowns in an effort to keep the streets clean; in this effort, they have picked up thousands of pounds of different narcotics this year alone. Despite the work done by the police departments, there is still a large quantity of drugs that make their way to the streets; one of these drugs that is ravaging Cibola County and the rest of the country is Fentanyl.

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Cibola County Emergency Manager Dustin Middleton has lived in Cibola County since October of 2012 and has been the emergency manager since September of 2015. Middleton has an extensive background in emergency service, particularly in the fire service. Before moving to Cibola County, Middleton lived in Arizona and gained 12 years of fire experience there. Overall, Middleton has worked in the fire service for 21 years.

Southwest Yard & Garden; Is there anything grasshoppers won't eat?

A few people have recently reported what appears to be grasshopper damage on a variety of landscape and garden plants. The telltale signs are 1) ragged, chewed holes in leaves, stems, and fruit, and 2) droppings (aka frass, insect excrement) that look kind of like little black ants without legs. Please note that circular, smooth holes on the edges of leaves are more likely to have been made by leafcutter bees, and are a welcome sign in my garden!

Navajo Technical University constructs gazebos to offer outdoor learning spaces

Crownpoint, NM – Navajo Technical University began construction of outdoor gazebos at its main campus and four instructional sites to offer outdoor spaces for instruction and activities for students, faculty, and staff. The project began through a collaboration to develop an approach for the return to full operation in the 2021 Fall semester that presents safe and new learning spaces. The gazebos will be made with features such an electrical white board and solar panels. Leading the assembly for the project are the construction technology students who are supported by the administration.
