CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — Autumn has arrived in full stride. A fall-color snapshot from Oct. 14 shows widespread moderate color across western and central New Mexico, with high to peak color appearing in higher elevations from the Zuni Mountains to the Mt. Taylor high country.
In Cibola County, aspens and oaks at elevation are nearing their best display now, while valley cottonwoods along the San José and Bluewater corridors should brighten through late October.
Where to Look
Zuni Mountains: Hillsides west and southwest of Grants are showing strong oranges and yellows; expect the most vivid color on cooler mornings and late afternoons.
Mt. Taylor area: Color bands are moving downslope; higher trails and overlooks above Lobo Canyon typically change first, with mid-elevation pockets following over the next week.
Valleys & riparian areas: Cottonwoods along the Rio San José and around Bluewater are beginning to turn; their gold usually peaks later than the high country.
Travel and Safety Tips
Roads into the mountains are narrow and can be rough and dusty.
Drive slowly, yield to pedestrians and cyclists, and use high-clearance vehicles on rough forest roads. Trailhead parking fills quickly—park only in marked areas and keep access lanes clear. Pack layers for fast-changing weather, bring water and a paper map, and don’t rely on cell service in remote spots.
