Cibola National Forest to implement Forest Closure for Stage 3 Fire Restrictions effective Thursday, May 19 Mt. Taylor, Mountainair, and Sandia Ranger Districts

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – May 17, 2022 – Based on extreme fire danger, the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands (NF& NGs) will implement Stage 3 Forest Closure on all National Forest System lands, roads, and trails within the boundary of the Mt. Taylor, Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts. Maps identifying the Restricted Areas are attached and made part of this Order as Exhibits A, B, and C.

With my success in Grants converting a Hellstrip into a beautiful xeric garden, I was ready to expand my ideas to the house I purchased in Thoreau. It was a typical landscape of blue grass, elm trees, and a chain link fence keeping out the city herd of horses. Beyond the fence were more elm trees and rock that was the driveway. Where vehicles didn’t drive, sand covered the rock and blew into the air every time it was windy.

Very High Fire Danger in Cibola County

GRANTS, N.M. – Wildfires are ravaging New Mexico. Currently, residents are living through the largest wildfire in New Mexico State history: The Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire has burned 299,565 acres of New Mexico land as of press time. Cibola County was recently placed in “Extreme Fire Danger” status, meaning just a simple spark can ignite a large inferno. Because of this, the Cibola National Forest will be closing to visitors and campers beginning May 19 and is expected to be reopened December 31.
