CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – On Dec. 2 a fast-moving winter storm dropped snow across the county, including on Interstate 40. The suddenly snowy roads made driving conditions dangerous and resulted in a series of car accidents on I-40 through Cibola County. Several semi-trucks went off the road and traffic became backed up for hours on the road, Cibola County Sheriff’s Deputies, Milan Police officers and Grants Police helped to respond to the resulting accidents. Hospital board receives updates; Pandemic causes staffing shortages

GRANTS, N.M. – The Cibola General Hospital board held its final regular meeting on Nov. 23. The board has recently implemented additional sessions to keep members informed during the pandemic. These sessions are generally held the week prior to board meetings; the Nov. 12 session provided updates in preparation for the regular monthly meeting.

Teacher addresses officials about COVID-19

GRANTS, N.M. – The Grants/Cibola County School District board held lengthy discussions about how the coronavirus is affecting academic skills. The district implemented the hybrid-learning format on Oct. 19. All schools had operated entirely on the distancelearning format since the start of this academic year until the district opted to offer the hybrid format, which included 50 percent online instruction and 50 percent in-person classes. Families retained the option of distance-learning only, according to G/CCSD officials. The Navajo Nation issued a Nov. 16 order to close all schools and businesses on the Navajo Reservation. The Pueblos of Acoma and Laguna have been closed by order of their respective Governors. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s executive order does not change current school protocols said Superintendent Max Perez.

Support for New Mexico; Legislature enacts pandemic relief bill

SANTA FE, N.M. –The New Mexico State Legislature approved more than $300 million in federal funds that will be used to provide economic support for New Mexicans during a quick special session of the legislature on November 24. The legislature was called to the capitol by the governor to ensure support for New Mexicans who would be hurt financially by the recent shutdown order. The bill was signed into law and made official on November 25.
