Arts Education is Essential

Body
Landen Smith is a student at Cubero Elementary and is in Debra Woodward's third grade art class. He and his depiction of the famous Burning Man, Zozobra, are being recognized as a 2022 Winner by the New Mexico Department of Education in the School Art Spring Showcase, Arts Education is Essential contest. Landen's work will be displayed on NM Expo's Digital Display Boards on Lomas and San Pedro, as well as Lomas and Louisiana from June 19 - 22. Landen's piece was one of several submissions from Bernalillo, Chaves, Cibola, Colfax, Dona Ana, Eddy, Grant, Lincoln, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, San Juan, Santa Fe, Sierra, Taos and Union Counties, so to be selected is truly awesome and is well deserving of our recognition here at GCCS! Visit www.exponm.com to see all of the submissions by our students and those in the other counties. You can also see Landen's work on the NMPED Facebook and Twitter pages! We all could not be prouder of Landen and his hard work and dedication to this project! Congratulations Landen and also to Ms. Woodward! You both are awesome!

Penstemon—Figwort Family

Body
There are 47 species and subspecies of Penstemon native to New Mexico. There are dwarf spreading ground cover plants and ones with flower stalks reaching five feet tall. A number of them are easy to grow and all are drought tolerant. All penstemons attract pollinators and hummingbirds. In recent years Penstemons have become a beautiful addition to our Xeric gardens. You can find them in local nurseries and on the internet.
