Pirates Come Up Short at State, 3-2

The Pirates for a third time this year, came up short (3-2) against St. Pius in the Nusenda 4-A baseball quarterfinal game this last Thursday in Albuquerque. This quarterfinal game was the most intense of the three matchups for its sheer importance.

Martinez Shines at State

Junior Laila Martinez took the limelight in the 800-meters with a time of 2:13.65 to place first in that event. “I was very excited and very happy with the results,” said Martinez.“I had an off-season last year—it was hard on me–coming into this season it did help me to get mentally stronger.

Laila Martinez, a junior, on the Grants High School Track and Field team. Laila placed first in the 800-meters with a time of 2:13.65 and placed second in the 1600-meters with a time of 5:06.55 at the Nusenda Credit Union's 2025 4A State Track and Field Championship held this past weekend.

Third time is a charm— and when it comes to state baseball playoffs, you’ll take any charms that come your way.
All smiles last month as John “JJ” Horacek signed his letter of intent to play basketball at Benedictine University in Mesa, Arizona. There is a cliché, “Basketball never Stops,” but for one Grants High School Senior, John “JJ” Horacek, basketball will not be stopping anytime soon as he has signed his letter of intent to play basketball with Benedictine University out of Mesa, Arizona.
