A feast for beetles

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Bark Beetles have invaded Cibola County and are winning the battle. The beetles have long lived in the region but until recently kept their destruction localized to the Cibola National Forest. At the midpoint of October, Cibola residents began alerting the Cibola Citizen to beetles they were finding in their trees, and now whole communities across Grants and Milan are being infected by the tiny invaders.

OMA questions arise from last school board meeting

GRANTS, N.M. – The Grants Cibola County School District held a special meeting on November 9, this meeting was convened to enter special session and discuss threatened or pending lawsuits. Controversy surrounded this meeting in the days leading up to it, because of a rumor that the board was going to discuss removing one of the members – an act which would be a violation of the New Mexico State Constitution because school board members are elected officials. President of the school board, Ron Ortiz, released a letter the day before the meeting where he stressed that the board is only meeting to discuss the threatened or pending lawsuit. On Nov. 9, when the board left executive session, Ortiz alerted the public that the board did discuss removing a board member, raising questions about the meeting’s compliance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.

Military service in the United States was once more common than it is today. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the draft for military service was ended in 1973, a point in time when 2.2 million men and women made up the countryÕs active military personnel. By 2018, the number had dipped below 1.3 million. Military service in Canada is also somewhat uncommon, as the Department of National Defence reports that active military personnel totaled just 68,000 as of 2018.

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Election Day was Tuesday, November 2. There was only one contested race in Cibola County for this election cycle. Two bond issues passed, both provided funding to schools used by the people of Cibola.

Managers spotlight local law enforcement at ‘Coffee with the Managers’

GRANTS, N.M. – A ‘Coffee with the Managers’ meeting was held on November 4 at 8 a.m. at the Coyote Del Malpais Golf Course clubhouse. At this meeting, Cibola County Manager Kate Fletcher, Grants City Manager Vanessa Chavez, and Village of Milan Manager Linda Cooke made themselves available to the public, provided updates, and opened up the floor for local law enforcement agencies to do the same.

Aggie Cupboard coming to NMSU Grants Campus

GRANTS, N.M. — The Aggie Cupboard is officially coming to the NMSU Grants Campus on November 12 during a grand opening for the program at 1 p.m. at South House 1500 N. Third Street. “We desire to see a campus free from hunger and the worry of hunger,” said the flyer for the event. “Cibola County ranks as one of the highest counties in New Mexico with the most food insecurity amongst the general population. We believe that the generosity and compassion of the NMSU Grants community will continue to alleviate food insecurity and provide stigma free food access to students.”

Cibola absconder arrested in Texas

PANOLA COUNTY, T.X. – Anthony Rains, 30, wanted by New Mexico’s 13th Judicial District Court on a warrant, was arrested on November 1 by Panola County, Texas, Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Duncan. Rains was arrested for failure to appear at court back in December of 2019 in Cibola County, New Mexico. Panola Deputies arrested and booked Rains into the Panola County Detention Center in Gary, T.X.
