Ty Detmer Youth Football League Holds Sports Camps and Other Events

GRANTS, NM – This weekend multiple sports camps and events were held for the DYFL (Ty Detmer Youth Football League). All sports covered were Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, and Football. Some of the coaches for these sports camps included: The University of New Mexico volleyball coaching staff, Edna Campbell former WNBA player, Jason Giambi former MLB player, Anthony Gordon former MLB player, Ty Detmer former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner, and a few others.

At the recent District 5-4A meeting for baseball, our team had a fantastic showing among the award recipients! After completing a District Championship season, our kids were recognized for their hard work and dedication by being awarded the following awards!

Alex Waggoner Scores First Pro Goal as New Mexico United Beats Monterey Bay, 2-1

Sergio Rivas scores in a third-straight match to lead United to victory ALBUQUERQUE, NM Two New Mexicans led the way as New Mexico United bested Monterey Bay FC on Saturday night by a 2-1 score in front of nearly 10,000 fans at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. The victory was a measure of revenge for United, who fell to MBFC on the road earlier in the season.

May is a special month for high school seniors and athletes as they look back on their memories, seasons and accomplishments. For one, Grants High School senior, Ebony Chavez, a special honor and recognition was bestowed on her as she was named the 2023 female Athlete of the Year for Grants High School.

Pirates state runs ends at Quarterfinals

The Pirates’ notable 2023 baseball season came to a windy and dusty end this past Saturday with a 75 loss at the Albuquerque Baseball Complex at the bats and gloves of the Academy Chargers (18-11, 6-2), in the quarter finals of the 4A state baseball tournament this past Thursday, May 11.

Pirate Tennis Finishes Season on High Note

State Tennis commenced on Wednesday 5/3/23 for the Pirates at Albuquerque Academy. The Pirates doubles team of Isaiah Tena and Joshuah Sausa were eliminated in their first match against a doubles team from Albuquerque Academy. The Lady Pirates doubles team of Alexia Munson and Karsyn Cash fell to the eventual individual 4A doubles champions from Albuquerque Academy. Both the doubles team of Chloe Rychener and Kylette Garcia and the singles competitor Annaliesa Lowther defeated their first-round opponents. The Lady Pirate team of Rychener/Garcia fell in the second round to the doubles team from Espanola Valley. Lowther was defeated by the #1 player coming into the tournament, Tatiana Spilca from Sandia Prep. Even though the Pirates Tennis team was unable to bring home anything from the tournament, they still made Grants proud!

Athlete of the Week

This week'a Athlete of the Week is Laila Martinez of the Lady Pirates Track and Field team who competed this past weekend at the 4A state track and field meet. Martinez placed first in the 800-meter with a time of 2:19.38; second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:12.64; and third in the 3200-meter run with a time 11:46.94..

Pirates Tame the Wildcats

Pirates sent the Wildcats home in the first round of the state baseball tournament after defeating them in two games 10-4 and 8-5 respectively. “We knew coming into the series with Deming that they were better than a 16 seed—it would be a good tough out,” said GHS baseball head coach Mike Furbee.

Pirate Track Heads to Finals

The GHS track team is sending several members of the boys’ and girls’ track team to the 4A state track meet after qualifying earlier in the season. Qualifiers for the boys’ team are John Paul Miller in the 3200 meters, Knight Long in the 200 meters, Bobby Perez in the triple jump, Manuel Gonzales in the high jump and Knight Long, Andres Lazos, Manuel Gonzales and John “JJ” Horacek in the 4x100 medley and the 4x200 medley.
