Pirates Clip Eagles Wings in 9

A colossal baseball game last Friday as the Pirates went 9 innings and bested the 4th ranked Belen Eagles by a score of 7-6. A single by junior Boudy Melonas to center field allowed teammate Niko Young to score the winning run securing the 8th “W” in a row for the Pirates and a second place ranking in 4-A baseball.

Pirates 2-0 in Districts

The Grants Pirates baseball team are off to a great start in district play after going 2-0 last week in district play with an 112 rout of the Valenica Jaguars (7-11,0-1) on the road on April 2nd followed by a narrow 4-3 defeat of St. Pius High School on April 5th at home. “I thought we played well after a shaky first inning—once we settled into the game, we pretty much had control of it,” said GHS head coach Mike Furbee of the Valencia game. Pirate notables in that game included pitcher Niko Young who pitched 5.1 innings and had allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run and 8 strikeouts. Eric Barela Jr., Noah Lundstrom and Dominick Gonzales with 2 RBI’s a piece. Izeyah Manzanares and Diego Lopez had 1 RBI each.

This week's Athlete of the Week is senior Izeyah Manzanares of the GHS baseball team, whose recent pitching was crucial to the Pirates victories over district rivals. Manzanares recently pitched 7 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts in a close game against district rival St.

Lady Pirates Ready for District Play

After starting the weekend with a 5 AM departure to West Las Vegas high school to play in a tournament, the Lady Pirates softball team went 12 this past weekend. The Lady Pirates lost to East Mountain 11-3 and then defeated Tohatchi 17-1. In their third game they lost a close one to Taos, 12-10.

Cibola County...March Madness Map

Shane Douma-Sanchez, who still calls our county home, is a red shirt on the division 1 University of New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team and when the map of counties represented by basketball team members in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament came out Cibola County light up in red representing Mew Mexico.

Pirates Go 3-0 Before Districts

The Pirate went 3-0 last week after shutting out Miyamura High School (1-9), a team who narrowly defeated them last year, by a score of 110. The team had 22 at bats, 10 hits and 10 RBIs in that 11-0 shellacking of the Patriots. Estevan Barela was the winning pitcher of the game.
