Students Shine at Speed Stacking

Speed stacking or cup stacking is an individual sport where students compete to beat their time. This was an exciting day because the students came to Milan Elementary to compete against one another by grade level. The following schools participated were Mesa View, Mt. Taylor, Milan, Seboyeta, Cubero, San Rafael, and Bluewater. There were five students from every grade level that represented themselves at the tournament. Each student performed 'The cycle' which starts with the 3-6-3, 6-6, 1-101 and ends in the 3-6-3.

Nava continued to take the ball on the bounce, and tapped home from just a few feet away for his first career goal at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. Nava’s goal was during United’s “Magic Minute” - a tradition that sees the entire stadium stand and yell from when the clock strikes 19:12 (the year of New Mexico’s admittance to the Union as a state), until 20:18 (when New Mexico United was founded. Pirates Unable to Hold Jaguars, 40-7

“Turnovers, missed tackles—we had a couple of mistakes on special teams that cost us field position and ultimately–points,” said GHS Head Football Coach Brandon Hernandez of the Pirates district loss to the Valencia Jaguars(4-5, 2-0) last Thursday, October 20. The senior heavy Jaguars, who are ranked ninth in the most recent coaches’ poll, were a very present and physical team on the field that night.

Laila Martinez of the Grants High School cross country team is this week’s Athlete of the Week. Laila came in first place at Pirates home meet this past Friday in the girls meet.

Pirates Bested 50-0 by Fighting Colts

The 7-1 Fighting Colts of Silver City High School went on a 36-0 run in the first quarter against the Grants Pirates football team and added 14 points in the second half for a 50-0 district win over the Grants High School Pirates Football Team this past weekend in an away game for the Pirates. “Silver was fast, physical and played great team football,” said Grants High School football Head Coach Brandon Hernandez.

Lady Pirates Seek State Playoff Berth

Lady Pirate’s soccer is looking at a shot at the state playoffs after a recent winning streak that is taking them to a current record of 9-6-1, 5-2. The Lady Pirates have won six of their last seven games with their sole loss in that streak to the St. Pius Lady Sartans, a traditional powerhouse in girls’ soccer. The score was 7-1 in that contest. The Lady Pirates are second in district 4-A 5 with a 5-2 district record just behind St. Pius with a 7-0 district record. The Lady Pirates are currently ranked ninth in the state in 4A out of 25 teams in that classification. The Lady Pirates close out their regular season against the Valencia Jaguars (4-9-10) on Thursday, October 20 on the road.

Monster Mash Archery Bash

GRANTS, N.M. – Students came from Mesa View, Mt. Taylor, Milan, and Los Alamitos Middle School dressed up in their Halloween costume to compete in the Monster Mash Archery Bash Tournament held at Milan elementary school. This event promoted the National Archery in the Schools Programs within our school district and with the help of Bruce Atencio, who is the Archery Education Coordinator for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The National Archery in the Schools Program consists of target archery where archers shoot at a bull's-eye target to score points.
