NMSP sergeant reflects on years in law enforcement

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Former New Mexico State Police Sergeant James Jenkins knew that he wanted to be involved in law enforcement from a very young age. According to Jenkins, who is originally from Detroit, Michigan, he wanted to be involved in law enforcement since he was about three or fours years old because his uncle was an officer and inspired him to follow that path as well.

Community members gather together on a July 31 evening at the Fire and Ice Park in Grants, New Mexico to have a “Grill n’ Chill”. The gathering started at approximately 4 p.m. and the community was encouraged to bring their “cars, trucks, bikes, and BBQ grills,” which is what they did. Hot dogs were grilled as the cars arrived, and those in attendance conversed and enjoyed their time together. Kylie Garcia - CC

Navajo Technical University awarded four-year grant to expand its computer science program

Crownpoint, NM –The American Indian College Fund selected four tribal colleges and universities that included Navajo Technical University for its Tribal Colleges and Universities Computer Science Capacity Building Grant. The four-year grant gives each designated TCU the prospect to improve and expand their current computer science programs to increase student and professional representation in the industry. At NTU, the computer science program offers a certificate and associate’s degree for students, the grant will assist the program in developing a bachelor’s degree in the program.

Northern New Mexico National Forests sign final decision on riparian restoration

The Carson, Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests and Kiowa National Grasslands have released the final decision notice on a proposal to restore riparian, wetland and aquatic ecosystems in Northern New Mexico. The signed decision opens the door to begin implementing multiple projects to improve aquatic and terrestrial habitat, watershed health and water quality across the three national forests.

Library courtyard reopened

After over a year of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grants Public Library courtyard is now opened to be enjoyed by the public. The library offers a range of services to the Grants-Cibola community, from internet access to printing services and most notably access to a wide-selection of books.

Fatal crash kills two missionaries

RAMAH, N.M. – Just as Ramah, New Mexico was preparing to celebrate the communities founding on Pioneer Day, a fatal accident on July 22 rocked the community, killing two. To honor the past missionaries, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints held a Missionary March at the Pioneer Day celebration where people were asked to wear white shirts with a tie and slacks.
