Maintaining Roads in Cibola County and Addressing Issues

Body
GRANTS, NM – With past adverse weather conditions and the spring season right around the corner, the opening topic of the March 2 Coffee With the Managers involved county roads. Citizens call to report that they cannot leave their homes. The county cannot go onto private property, even if invited by the owner. County Manager Kate Fletcher stated it is against the state statute – or law – and the county is liable for damages or other issues on private property.

Haak’u Museum is Open

Body
ACOMA PUEBLO – There is a sign warning non-residents that Acoma Pueblo is closed, and that is true except for the Sky City Cultural Center and Haak'u Museum. The scenic drive to reach the museum is about 36 minutes from Grants. Whether you choose to take I-40 or take the old Route 66 and Indian Service route 38, it’s well worth the time. Ancient lava flows border the winding frontage road to Pueblo Road until a large brown sign directs the visitor to Haak’u Museum on Haaku Road. Haaku Road takes the visitor back in time to the old west where a working windmill moves water, and huge building-size boulders perch precariously above a paved road that may be the only indication of modern times. The twelve-mile drive on Haaku Road to the Cultural Center and Museum is tantamount to venturing into a desertscape rivaling the Grand Canyon. Prepare for the lookout that offers a wide-angle view of the venerated sandstone monoliths lining the road on the descent into what could be mistaken for another beautiful planet.

It Takes a Village

Body
Linda Cooke says it took Kate Fletcher, Manager of Cibola County, two months of encouragement before she applied for the Village of Milan Manager job. “I’d just lost my husband. There wasn’t a whole lot for me. I was [going to] retire, but Kate had faith in me. They shocked me by hiring me.” Cooke had already been working as the Assistant Manager/Interim Manager for Catron County for the last 20 years but still doubted the full extent of her abilities. Sometimes we need to see ourselves through someone else’s eyes to know we can do it. “Kate Fletcher was my mentor. She made me see I could do it.”

AI on Cibola County

Body
GRANTS, N.M. – The Cibola Citizen recently had access to an advanced artificial intelligence. We asked it a simple prompt, “Write me a 450-word story about Cibola County, New Mexico. Explain what the people are like.” It did not properly follow the prompt as the story came in at 480 words. Find the computer-generated story below: Cibola County, New Mexico, was a place of great natural beauty, with its rugged terrain and vast, open spaces that seemed to stretch on forever. But for the people who called this place home, life was often a difficult struggle against the elements and the challenges of living in a remote, sparsely populated area.

Grants High Does Peter Pan

Body
GRANTS, N.M. – In the Grants High School production of Peter Pan, Captain Hook is a woman. Peter Pan, who is historically played by an adult woman, is played by a Grant’s High School newcomer who just “blew us away,” veteran director Anissa Shaver said. The Peter Pan production is a “re-telling by playwright Jon Jory.” According to Shaver, the production is very similar to the conventional Peter Pan story by Scottish writer J.M. Barrie that most of us are familiar with.
