Shedding Light Unity over Ukraine

Body
Over the past week or so, we’ve all seen social media and the news engulfed in covering Russia’s attack on Ukraine. We’ve seen horrifying reports of damage to Ukrainian civilians and reports of Russians willing to protest the invasion being arrested for doing so. We’ve also seen amazing stories of the strength of Ukrainians rallying to defend their home — from 13 Ukrainian solders willing to sacrifice themselves against a Russian warship bomb strike in order to guard Snake Island territory, to the nation’s very own leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, standing his ground and involving himself in the fight, to Ukrainian civilians reportedly capturing and taking over a Russian tank. We’ve also seen monuments around the world light up in blue and yellow in support of Ukraine.

The War in Ukraine is a Teachable Moment

Body
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — I discuss the topic of leadership a lot in our home. It is not much of a surprise as my wife and I have multiple combat tours between us. Together, we have over 40 years of collective military leadership experience and the honor of leading troops into combat. Over the course of our careers, we have seen the full spectrum of leadership; some of the most rewarding experiences are when we observe those unlikely leaders emerge in the face of adversity. In the past few days, like so many other Americans, we have watched new heroes emerge in Ukraine, as an unjust war unfolds.

Always Living and Learning

The family story goes that my Uncle Jack, when he was about 15, received a shotgun one Christmas in the mid-1940s. With a look of glee, he grabbed it, pointed it upward and blasted a giant hole in the ceiling of the Sanders family home in Alexandria, Virginia.

Five Million Ukrainian Refugees Possible

Body
Ukrainians’ fate in the country’s Russia-perpetrated war is, on February’s last day, unclear. At first thought to be overwhelmed by the Russian invasion, everyday Ukrainians without military experience have chosen not to flee their country, but have elected instead to remain and volunteer to defend their sovereignty. Ukrainian defense minister Oleksii Reznikov said that 25,000 guns have been handed over to territorial defense members in the Kyiv region alone. In Kyiv’s streets, President Volodymyr Zelensky, surrounded by his key staff members, vowed to defend Ukrainian independence.

Water is Life

Dear Editor: We are all concerned about water in this time of drought, and many of us with yards want to at least keep the trees and shrubs there alive. When it does rain, water can be collected from roofs with "barrels" as simple as garbage containers from Wal Mart or Diamond G.

A vision for the future

Dear Editor, I would like to extend my gratitude to those people who have the vision and belief in Grants to continue transforming into an appealing and prosperous town in the near future. Henceforth, as a visionary, I thought best to bullet-point ideas which might align with others, and to use as a springboard for change.

Mulberry Query: Big Decisions About Pruning Even Bigger Trees

Body
Question: I have a very large mulberry tree that offers great shade on the west side of my house in the summer. Last spring, I hired someone to cut back the limbs over the house and carport where they were dragging on the roof and the electrical line. There is an area of branches that are thick and will be hanging over the driveway by midsummer this year. I have talked to a tree trimmer who is willing to do a minor trimming, but said that eventually I will need to cut the tree back significantly, down by about half. He said it will be healthy, leaf out, etc., and be better for the tree. He also said he would not cut it back once it begins to bud out. Does a mulberry tree this size need to be cut back by half now or in the future for its health or safety? I am thinking I may just not prune this year until I know more and am sure of what the tree needs. S. White, Doña Ana Cty.
