Williams Crowned 2A Champ

After crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:18.91 at the state cross country tournament, Laguna- Acoma junior, Lucas Williams, was crowned state champion in the 2A 5,000-meter race. Williams said, “I wanted to get out there and have fun–-a few nerves here and there—I just got rid of them–I’m here for myself, my teammates and fans,” said Wililams “I focused on getting out there and having fun got us 3rd place as a team”.

Martinez 9th at State Meet

The young GHS boys’ cross-country team and individual runner, Laila Martinez, ran this past Saturday representing Grants High School at the Western Sky Community Care State Cross Country State Championship. Martinez, a sophomore at Grants High School placed 9th, out of a field of 121 runners competing in 4A, with a time of 19:41.64.

The Pirates’ state football run came to an end this past Friday at the Port of the Pirates as the 9th seeded Academy Charges defeated 8th seeded Pirates by a score of 35-7. “We knew that Academy was going to be tough and that their record did not do justice to the kind of team we knew they were,” said GHS head coach Steve Brown.

Pirates Top St. Pius 21-14—Off to State

That’s right – after a 2114 defeat over St. Pius High School (4-6,1-2) last Friday night at the Port of the Pirates your hometown Grants Pirates received an 8th seed in the 4-A state football tournament and will host the 9th seeded Academy Chargers (5-5, 0-3) this Friday in a home game. “Academy is a playoff team— which means they will be ready to play and advance,” said Brown “We will need to play a great game to continue our season, and trust me, we will be ready.”

“Pirates Defeat Jags 35-21”

GHS head football coach Steve Brown wanted to come out banging against the Valencia Jaguars last Friday and that’s exactly what they did. In a crucial district game for both teams the Pirates came out ahead 14-7 in the first quarter the Pirates added another 7 points in the second quarter to make the halftime score 21-7 Pirates. The Pirates and Valencia traded a touchdown a piece in the 3rd and 4th quarter for the final score of 35-21.
