Spring Sports Swinging into District Play

The Ides of March have just passed us, and with that, Spring sports teams launch into district play. The Grants High School boys’ baseball team (10-6), is ranked sixth in class 4-A in the MaxPreps standings and is second in the district just behind the St. Pius Spartans (8-4) as they start their district play this week.

Hawks Get it Done Together

The Laguna Acoma Hawks baseball team is on a four-game winning streak after defeating Thoreau 19-1 and duplicating that score, 19-1, on Tuesday, March 2 in a double header hosted by the Thoreau Hawks (2-4). “We continue to work hard at our practices and our games to learn and grow each day – we are now starting to get a good rhythm with our defense and our pitching,” said L- A head coach Brandon Gonzales

GHS boys and girls track team participated recently at a track meet at Thoreau High School’s Robin Langer Classic hosted by Gallup High School. Several boys and girls placed in the top three of their events. Notables on the boy’s team were Luis Lopez first in the 100- meter dash with a time of 12.10, Knight Long first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.94, Bobby Perez first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.29 and Manuel Gonzales first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.43. The Pirates also placed first in the 4X100 meter relay with a time of 45.40

“Pirate Baseball 9-4 at Spring Break”

The Grants High School baseball team is 9-4 overall after going 1-2 over the weekend at the Farmington Scorpion Invitational Tournament. On Thursday, March 17, the Pirates went toe-to-toe with Farmington High School (10-1) in the first game of the tournament and narrowly defeated the Scorpions in 8 innings. The Pirates scored two runs in the 1st inning and Scorpions scored three runs in the 3rd inning to give the Scorpions the lead by one after 4 innings. The Pirates scored a run in the 5th and 7th innings to make a total of four runs scored for the game. The Scorpions added one run in the 6th and a crucial run in the 8th to give them the 5-4 win after 8 innings.

As the March winds open up the Pirate Baseball team is six games deep into the season and is currently 4-2 as they dominated I-40 rival, the Gallup Bengals (1-4), 9-6 and 11-1 in a double header last Saturday, March 5 in their home opener.

Coaches Reflect On their Basketball Season

GRANTS, N.M. – March Madness is sweeping the state. However, both the Grants Highs School boys and girls programs exited early in the district tournament after one game. “Looking back on a 9-15 record I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment not because we didn’t achieve enough, but because I knew we had so much more potential this season,” said GHS head boys coach Landon Chavez. “This season was unprecedented and unlike any other---with mask mandates, Covid cases, and tons of other adversity---we experienced it all.”

This week's Athlete of the Week is Nick Bustos of the Grants High School boy’s Baseball Team. Nick, a junior, was the sole pitcher against the Gallup Bengals last week in the second game and he only allowed one run and earned an ERA of 1.4.
