“Bernalillo too much for lady Pirates”

The Bernalillo lady Spartans (4- 0) were too much to handle for the lady Pirates last Tuesday in the Pirates home opener at the Port of the Pirates – the Pirates lost 73-33. The lady Spartans set the tempo for the night with a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Albuquerque, NM - New Mexico United defender, and Albuquerque native, Justin Schmidt is transitioning from a career as a professional soccer player to a career in the United States Armed Forces. Schmidt is joining the United States Army, with his service set to begin immediately. Since United’s first match, Schmidt has been a huge defensive presence, playing in 60 matches in the Black & Yellow and scoring twice.

Pirate basketball teams hold tryouts

GRANTS, N.M. – What’s more crowded than the traffic on I-40? Well, the Grants High School boys and girls basketball programs had large numbers for their tryouts last week. Fifty-five boys tried out for the GHS boys basketball program according to second year coach, Landon Chavez. “It was great to have a turnout of 55 players – however with such luxury comes some difficult decisions,” said Chavez as he cut down his numbers after three nights of tryouts. Now that the teams are formed, he is focusing on the season.

Lady Hawks take 2A state volleyball title

The Laguna-Acoma lady Hawk volleyball team entered the 2A state tournament as a number three seed and worked its way through the bracket to meet up with the number one seeded Tucumcari Rattlers where the Hawks swept the match 3-0. winning 25-22, 25-20 and 25-12. The lady Pirate GHS Cross country team traveled to the state cross country meet and placed ninth in the state in 4-A competition. The results for the runners are as follows: Laila Martinez 23rd: 21:35 Skylar Charlie 29th: 21:48 Iyessa Arriaga 53rd: 22:51 Cadence Siow 72nd: 23:45 Andria Moquino 105th: 26:59 Leah Pedro 114th: 28:14 Boys Cross Country Two boys from the GHS boys cross country team also competed in the state cross country meet and their results are as follows: Andreas Oso 42nd: 18:30 Ruben Shroulote 79th: 19:27 GHS Volleyball The lady Pirate volleyball team concluded their season last week with a combined record of 12-1l, 4-4.

Pirates falter against Bernalillo, 35-6

The Pirates dropped their final home game to district rival, the Bernalillo Spartans, by a score of 35-6. The Spartans scored a safety with nine minutes to go in the first quarter and scored a touchdown at the end of the first quarter to make the score 10-0, Bernalillo, at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Pirate. Larry Meador intercepted a Bernalillo pass at the 48 yard line, however, the Pirates were unable to convert that for any pay dirt. With just under two minutes it was Bernalillo’s turn for an interception as they picked a Pirate pass from quarterback Tyler Everhart at the thirty three yard line. With just under a minute left Bernalillo scored their second touchdown of the night and on their subsequent possession they scored their third touchdown of the night to make the score 27-0 after making their only extra point kick of the night.

GHS lady harriers take third in district; state race next

The GHS lady Pirate cross country team placed third in their district (4-A 5) and they will be able to compete at the state cross country meet to be held at Academy High School this Saturday, November 6th. The lady Pirates are led by seniors Andria Moquino, Skyler Charlie and Iyessa Arriaga. Cadence Siow, Laila Martinez and Leah Pedro are the other remaining team members that will compete this Saturday. Grants High School boys cross country had two qualify for the state cross country meet. They GHS boys cross country team qualified two runners for the state cross country meet. Ruben Shroulote and Andreas Oso will compete as individuals at the state cross country meet.

St. Pius defeats Pirates 39-8

One beautiful autumn evening, alumni, friends, and family packed the Port of the Pirates and enjoyed the new bleachers and striking turf field – many fans seeing the refurbished facility for the first time at the annual h o m e - coming football game. The Pi- rate football team, however, was routed by the visiting St. Pius Sartans by a score of 39- 8.
