Pirate sports wrap-up

As of late the Grants High School volleyball team (10-8, 2- 1) has garnered three wins in a row and have moved into second place in 4A district 5, just behind St. Pius (7-9, 4-0). On October 7 they defeated Rehoboth Christian 3-0 (25-12, 25-17 and 25-14) in a non-district game followed by another 3-0 win over district rival Valencia High School (25-20, 25- 23 and 25-18). On Thursday, October 14, the lady Pirates defeated district rival the Highland Hornets in three matches (25-20, 25- 22 and 25-21) to put them at 10-8. “Our energy has been high and we want to be a competitive team,” said outside hitter Ebony Chavez, of the lady Pirates recent surge.

Grants High School soccer alumni receiv player of the week award

WACO, Texas – Stephanie Doran of Louisiana College corralled the RRAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Oct. 4-10, while Kristina Simpson of University of the Southwest (N.M.) was named the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week for the same dates. This is the seventh set of conference awards for the 2021 women's soccer season.

Athlete of the week

The entire lady Pirate volleyball team is this week's Athlete of the Week after winning their last three games in a row to place them in second place in their district as they close out their regular season. Currently the lady Pirates are 10-8, 2-1.

Grants-based athlete commits to UNM baseball

GRANTS, N.M. — Isaac Gallegos, a 19-year-old currently playing baseball for Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado, recently committed to signing with the University of New Mexico to further both his academic and baseball careers. Gallegos’s journey with baseball started in Grants, New Mexico.

Jags Maul Pirates, 50-6

The road has not been kind to the Pirates as they drop their fourth game on the road to the Valencia Jaguars by a score of 50-6. The young Pirates struggled on offense as they were unable to garner more than 6 points off a pass from quarterback Tyler Everhart to Knight Long in the first quarter. Everhart connected with Long for a 40-yard pass to put the Pirates on the five-yard line. Everhart connected once again with Long with a short seven-yard pass for the Pirates lone touchdown of the night.

GHS sports wrap up

The GHS Pirates football team has a recent weekend game against the Los Lunas Tigers and lost that contest 54-0. Volleyball GHS girls volleyball is currently 7-7 coming off a 3-1 win over the lady Tigers of Aztec.
