Pirates split in Gallup

GRANTS, N.M. - March madness actually begins the Pirate basketball season, not ends the season, this year at least as COVID-19 alters schedule. The Pirates opened their season with Landon Chavez as the new head coach, no stranger to the Pirate helm, as he was the interim head coach last season for the Pirates final six games of the season. Under his coaching the Pirates made it to the first round of the state tournament.

Spring Break activities; Grants Recreation hosts basketball skills camp

N.M. - Last week was spring break for many local students. Some young athletes got to spend part of the week in a basketball skills’ camp provided by Grants Recreation Department, Future Foundations Family Center. This was just one of many camps that Grants Recreation has been putting together since November, according to Grants Recreation Director Joaquin Jiron.

Pirates tame Bengals; win 51-0

GALLUP, N.M. - Braving long traffic backups on the return drive fans who had traveled to Gallup were able to watch the Grants High School Pirate varsity football team handily defeat the hosting Gallup Bengals. The GHS Pirates are 2-0 after defeating the Bengals 51-0 on the road this past Friday at Ford Stadium.

Hernandez and Pirates run Sartans aground; win 13-2

BERNALILLO N.M. - With everyone masked up, reminiscent of old Pirate movie, this past Friday the GHS Pirate football team battled it out with district rival, the St. Pius Sartans, for four quarters. When the last whistle blew at the end of the game the Pirates loaded up the bus and brought back home a 13-2 victory and advanced to 1-0.

Another 500 Mile Club swimmer hits 100-mile mark

MILAN, N.M. - The 500 Mile Swim Club is a program facilitated by the Milan Natatorium that began around July of 2020. The goal is for club members to swim the number of laps that are equivalent to first, 100 miles, then 300 miles, and finally, 500 miles. The club now has about 22 participants, and so far, two have reached the 100- mile mark. The first was Kenneth Brown, and now, a woman named Lezlie Smith has joined Brown in accomplishing the feat of swimming 100 miles.

GHS athletes go from varsity blues to making varsity moves

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - Improved COVID-19 numbers are continuing to make a difference in the way New Mexico operates across the board. One thing that has been affected is school sports. Athletes in Cibola County were starting to lose hope that their 2021 season would ever come. Then, suddenly, news broke that schools under a hybrid-mode of learning could participate in NMAA sport competitions. Not only that, but now fans are also allowed at the competitions, depending on the color of their county. (The state has announced a tiered colorcoded system for re-opening activities.)

GHS ‘Speedy Gonzales’ to play college soccer

GRANTS, N.M. - Kristina Simpson, a Grants High School senior, signed with the University of the Southwest to play college soccer. The 17-year-old was front and center for the signing ceremony that was held last Thursday. The February 25 event took place at the main GHS football field bleachers. Simpson’s immediate family along with the current GHS soccer team and coach were all present.

Bella Barela and Suri Kiyite went on the road with their New Mexico Nike Premier Volleyball team to Amarillo, TX this past weekend. Both girls played extremely well playing against teams from all over the SW! These local athletes continue to train and play volleyball for their club team as they wait for school sports to return. Estevan Barela was able to get back on the diamond in Phoenix, Arizona for the President’s Day tournament. Estevan played for Duke City baseball. Estevan mainly played SS and second base, however, he did pitch in one game going 4 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits, 0 walks and striking out 11 batters. Courtesy photo
