Uranium Capitol Speedway; 2021 season up and running

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - Uranium Capitol Speedway has been established and operating in the Cibola County area since 1966 and moved to its permanent home of Milan, New Mexico in 1969. The speedway is a “nonprofit grassroots racetrack,” according to Uranium Capitol Speedway President Don Taylor.

GRANTS N.M. - The GHS Pirates boys’ basketball team had a heartbreak of a loss in a district showdown this past Tuesday, April 27 with the number two ranked team in the state, the Highland Hornets. After a slow start where the Pirates were down as much as 14 points in the first quarter they only trailed by 4 points at halftime, 23-19. The Pirates trailed by six at the end of the third quarter 33-27 and outscored the Hornets by 5 points in the fourth quarter to force a final possession showdown.

GRANTS N.M. - The Grants High School pirates boys basketball team let one slip away on Tuesday, April 13h in an empty locked out gymnasium as the lost another tight game by single digits as district rival Valencia Jaguars bested them 45-42 in the final seconds of the game.

Pirates unable to overcome Bernalillo, lose 61-54

GRANTS, N.M. - The Pirates just finished playing three games this week at home and despite some good runs and comebacks they were unable to pull out a win. The big game was the 11 a.m. Saturday matchup between the Pirates and longtime rival, the Bernalillo Spartans, who came in at 3-1. It did not disappoint for a rival matchup.

GRANTS, N.M. - March madness actually begins the Pirate basketball season, not ends the season, this year at least as COVID-19 alters schedule. The Pirates opened their season with Landon Chavez as the new head coach, no stranger to the Pirate helm, as he was the interim head coach last season for the Pirates final six games of the season. Under his coaching the Pirates made it to the first round of the state tournament.

Spring Break activities; Grants Recreation hosts basketball skills camp

N.M. - Last week was spring break for many local students. Some young athletes got to spend part of the week in a basketball skills’ camp provided by Grants Recreation Department, Future Foundations Family Center. This was just one of many camps that Grants Recreation has been putting together since November, according to Grants Recreation Director Joaquin Jiron.
