John Thomas Vernon

John Thomas Vernon was born in Pontiac, Michigan to Thomas Vernon and Mildred Good on November 2, 1942. John is a long-time resident of Cibola County residing mainly in San Rafael. In 1959 John found himself in Truth or Consequences, NM, he was traveling through as he had an opportunity to play minor league baseball, although this was a huge opportunity; he met his soon to be wife Sharon, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage together. He joined the US Army and took a tour to Germany. Upon his return, he always received odd jobs, but seemed to gravitate to Law Enforcement. He spent 40+ years in Law Enforcement in different entities. One of his proudest accomplishments was becoming “Major” and Chief of Security of WNMCF in Grants. He completed 25+years, ultimately retiring with the State of New Mexico in 2003. John is survived by his wife Sharon, sister Diane Crawford, brothers; Tommy

Camille R. Poncho- Pack, 51, of Encinal, New Mexico was suddenly called home by the Lord on February 4, 2021, following a prolonged hospital stay. Funeral services will be arranged at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions on the Laguna Pueblo.

Larry Gene MacKendrick

Larry Gene MacKendrick was born March 16, 1944 in Paonia, Colorado and passed away February 10, 2021 in Montrose, Colorado from Pneumonia. He grew up in Hotchkiss, Colorado, where he was active in 4-H, wrestling, and other sports. In 1970, Larry and his family moved to Grants, New Mexico. He worked for over 35 years as a science, social studies, and special education teacher in Grants and neighboring areas. His former science students recall some of his more outrageous experiments.

Donald J. Toivanen

Donald Toivanen, former resident of Grants and Michigan passed away on February 2, 2021 in Henderson, Texas. He was born in Ishpeming, Michigan to Victor and Aili (Toumi) Toivanen on October 28, 1939. Don attended school in Republic, Michigan and enlisted in the Navy after graduation. He moved to Grants after the Navy and worked several jobs as a barber, miner, prison guard and counselor for the Anaconda Company. He lived in Henderson, Texas for the past several years. He retired as a correctional officer for Bradshaw State Jail. Don was an avid golfer, enjoyed the casinos and other outdoor sports. He also loved the Green Bay Packers.
